Strato Pi CAN extends the capabilities of the Raspberry Pi with industrial-grade hardware features, making it ideal for use in automation, automotive, and other mission-critical environments where reliability and uninterrupted operation are essential.

  • Controller Area Network (CAN) V2.0B interface, up to 1 Mb/s, with opto-isolator and electrostatic discharge protection

Designed for 24/7 reliability, Strato Pi CAN includes a robust power input stage tailored for harsh industrial conditions. Unlike standard USB chargers, which are not built for continuous operation, this unit supports a wide DC voltage range and provides exceptional electrical protection.

  • Advanced filtering with oversized capacitors, inductors, and diodes
  • High-efficiency step-down converter with:
    • Up to 3A continuous output
    • ~95% conversion efficiency
    • Integrated protections: overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal shutdown
  • Reverse polarity protection with resettable fuses

Real-Time Clock (RTC)

For applications that require accurate timekeeping without relying on an internet connection, Strato Pi CAN integrates a battery-backed real-time clock.

  • Based on the Microchip MCP79410 RTC chip
  • Connected to the Raspberry Pi via I²C interface
  • Automatically switches to a replaceable CR1025 lithium battery during power loss
  • Offers advanced features beyond standard date/time tracking
  • Battery lasts over 10 years in always-powered systems


CAN Bus Interface

Strato Pi CAN brings industrial CAN bus communication to Raspberry Pi systems, making it ideal for automotive and automation use cases.

  • Implements CAN 2.0B standard
  • Speeds up to 1 Mbps
  • Based on:
    • Microchip MCP2515 CAN controller (SPI interface)
    • Microchip MCP2561 high-speed transceiver
  • Fully compatible with SocketCAN drivers in Linux
  • Opto-isolated TX and RX lines for electrical protection
  • Galvanic isolation via high-efficiency DC-DC converter

Both RS-485 and CAN interfaces can be used simultaneously for maximum flexibility.


RS-485 Serial Interface

Strato Pi CAN includes a fully isolated RS-485 port, enabling reliable communication with industrial devices.

  • Isolation from main power supply prevents ground loop failures
  • Achieved using:
    • High-efficiency isolated DC-DC converter
    • Three high-speed opto-couplers
  • Built-in microcontroller automatically handles data direction (no extra signals or configuration needed)
  • Communication via TX/RX pins on the Raspberry Pi


Hardware Watchdog

To ensure system uptime, the unit integrates a dedicated hardware watchdog independent from the Raspberry Pi's internal watchdog.

  • Monitors system responsiveness
  • Triggers an automatic hardware reset if the software becomes unresponsive
  • Fully GPIO-controlled for easy use in custom applications
  • Essential for unattended and mission-critical deployments
