An Industrial Raspberry Pi with Integrated UPS

Strato Pi UPS upgrades the Raspberry Pi with essential industrial-grade features, including uninterruptible power support, making it ideal for mission-critical applications where system uptime and service continuity are crucial.

It is specifically designed for industrial and professional environments, offering enhanced protection, communication interfaces, and power management.

The device complies with major international standards:

Mounting:

• 4 modules DIN rail case
• power supply and serial connections on screw terminal block

Power supply:

• 9-28Vdc power supply, with surge and reverse polarity protection, and 2.2A resettable fuse
• up to 4.0A max current to the 5V Raspberry Pi power supply input pins (at 24Vdc)
• auxiliary power supply output voltage, to power external devices through Strato Pi UPS
• integrated uninterruptible power supply (UPS), with external lead-acid 12V battery
• 2.2A resettable fuse on battery input
• simple UPS control and feedback via GPIO

Serial interfaces:

• standard RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces to the Raspberry Pi serial line, with opto-isolator and electrostatic discharge protection

High reliability and security:

• hardware watchdog implemented in the Strato Pi board, fully independent from the Raspberry Pi, controlled via GPIO
• real time clock (RTC) with replaceable back-up battery
• optional embedded Microchip ATECC608A/B secure element chip
• integrated boot loader for the Strato Pi micro-controller, allowing in-field firmware upgrades directly from the Raspberry Pi
• optional pre-assembled SPBF10X Strato Pi Fan active cooling temperature controlled high performance fan

Power Supply

Strato Pi UPS is equipped with an advanced power input stage designed for continuous 24/7 operation in harsh environments, far beyond the capabilities of standard USB chargers.

• Accepts a wide 9–28V DC input range
• Highly filtered and protected circuitry using oversized capacitors, inductors, and diodes
• High-efficiency step-down converter:
  • ~95% efficiency
  • Up to 3A continuous output current
  • Built-in protections: overcurrent, overvoltage, thermal shutdown
• Reverse polarity protection via resettable fuses
• Surge protection up to ±500V / 2Ω (1.2/50μs), ideal for industrial installations

Integrated UPS Functionality

To prevent data loss in critical systems such as logging or database applications, Strato Pi UPS includes a built-in uninterruptible power supply.

• Ensures uninterrupted operation and safe shutdown during power outages
• Automatically switches to battery power with no interruption
• Battery charging via high-efficiency step-up converter, independent of main input voltage
• GPIO-controlled power monitoring and clean shutdown initiation from any Raspberry Pi application

Real-Time Clock (RTC)

For time-critical applications without internet access, Strato Pi UPS features a battery-backed RTC to maintain accurate timekeeping.

• Based on Microchip MCP79410 RTCC chip
• Directly connected to Raspberry Pi via I²C bus
• Automatic battery switchover to ensure RTC functionality during power loss
• Uses a replaceable CR1025 lithium battery
• Battery life: over 10 years in always-powered installations

Serial Interfaces: RS-232 & RS-485

Strato Pi UPS adds robust, optically isolated serial communication ports missing from standard Raspberry Pi boards.

• RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces, fully isolated from power sources to avoid ground loops
• Isolation provided by:
  • High-efficiency DC-DC converter
  • Three high-speed opto-couplers
• RS-485 direction control handled automatically via onboard microcontroller:
  • No manual configuration required
  • Seamless communication via standard TX/RX pins

Hardware Watchdog

Designed for unattended and critical systems, Strato Pi UPS includes a dedicated hardware watchdog for enhanced fault recovery.

• Automatically resets the Raspberry Pi if the software hangs
• Controls both the Raspberry Pi and the auxiliary power output
• Independent from the internal CPU watchdog
• Controlled through GPIO, making it easy to implement in any application
• A reliable safeguard to ensure system continuity and prevent lockups
